Home of the NSF-IGERT Program: ConvEne — Conversion of Energy Through Molecular Platforms — Outreach

ConvEne trainees have participated in highly successful outreach efforts that engage elementary students and their parents. In partnership with the Materials Research Laboratory Education Department, trainees have participated in outreach activities and honed their technical, interpersonal, leadership and communication skills. It's A Material World was first launched in 2006 and involves elementary school science nights in the local Santa Barbara area. Hands-on activities inspire inquiry into Materials Science related topics and emphasize the fascinating nature of science. Students and parents explore the world of materials in five different stations and learn about present and future applications of the materials. Last year, 16 schools and over 1500 students participated in the activities presented by ConvEne and MRL graduate students and researchers. The program is led by ConvEne program coordinator, Dr. Julie Standish.
